DIARY OF A JAWNZ ENTHUSIAST

Sometime around 2013, I  discovered something that would change my life forever. Once I discovered jawnz, I never looked back. This blog is a collection of my thoughts on clothing, my relationship to clothes, and the interaction between clothing and the rest of the world.

On Kanye and his first Yeezy I would actually consider wearing

Kanye has always been a divisive figure in the public sphere, but he has been particularly divisive over the last few years, especially having to do with politics. and This happens to come at a time when the entire country is more politically divided then ever. Kanye's support of donald is problematic, as we all know the influence kanye has over our culture. but kanye likes donald because kanye is exactly like donald. or should i say "the donald"? This is just the first thing that makes kanye just like trump - they both love to refer to themselves in the third person. They just like hearing their name so much that they can't help but use it on themselves. this shared core identity also drives why they both love to be in the news. they just want to hear their name. so while donald is in the news constantly over the investigation into his potential impeachment, he still can't help making even more news by fucking up the middle east, just has he lambasted all of his predecessors for doing. but i'm not here to talk about donald, this is about kanye. and just as he is promoting his imax film, "jesus is King", the newest official images of kanye's signature yeezy sneakers are revealed.

THE NEWS OF ANOTHER YEEZY SNEAKER IS FAR FROM EARTH-SHATTERING NEWS AT THIS POINT, as proven by the photo above showing kanye completely surrounded by hundreds of yeezy sneakers. however, the new yeezy 700 mnvn is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. the first of which is they straight up look badass. this is just my opinion, but when i look at them i just get a feeling of aggression deep inside. they just look mean. the orange and black combination seems a little too jack-o-lantern-y to me, but the murdered out pair is right up my wheelhouse. i won't even have to worry about visibility, because reportedly the branding is reflective, which seems to be proven by this image kanye tweeted way back in december 2018.

aside from my opinion, these are also noteworthy because they come at a significant discount compared to the previous yeezy 700 and 700v2 silhouettes. these were prices at $300, while the new 700 mnvn comes at a much more digestible $220, putting it in the same category as the ubiquitous 350. will this mean these will see the same treatment of seemingly countless colorways? we will have to wait to see. i hope not, though because i think they already made the best one with the black on black, not to discredit the grey pair ye sported last year. but more importantly, the constant variations on the 350 is what has made me come to hate it. maybe i'm being too high-minded, but they're just basic at this point.
what isn't basic at this point, however, is kanye's other latest creative endeavor, "jesus is king". i'm not a plugged in movie reviewer, so i can't tell you anything about it, other than it focuses on one or a number of kanye's recent "sunday services", and also contains music from his upcoming album of the same name. this new era from ye is primarily, if not wholly focused on gospel music, which kanye has said will be his focus for the rest of his career.

while kanye's authority on faith is questionable at best considering some of his past behavior, lyrics, and even song titles (i'm looking at you "i am a god"), it is undeniable that kanye has long had a relationship with god. the relationship may not have always been the healthiest, as kanye rapped about on the fourth single from his debut album, "jesus Walks", but he has made use throughout his career of gospel samples, from the aforementioned "jesus walks", which samples "walk with me", performed by the arc choir, to the sampling of "father i stretch my hands" by pastor T. l. barret on "father stretch my hands pt. 1&2". what i'm saying here is kanye knows his way around gospel, and has been doing so for his entire career. while i haven't been nearly privileged enough to witness one of kanye's sunday services, nor lucky enough to see a prescreening of the film, i have watched videos on youtube from a few different iterations of the service. and the music doesn't disappoint, unless you are looking for the old kanye, chop up the soul kanye, because from what i can tell he's no longer concerned with chopping up the soul. now he's about putting it back together in perfect harmony. it's music that you feel and that makes you want to join along. but as nice as it sounded on the sound bar in my living room, i can't wait to hear it in perfect surround sound at an imax theater. the trailer didn't give many clues as to the visuals, but i am confident there will also be stunning visuals. the documentary was filmed at James turrell's never-before-seen installation in the painted desert in arizona, which if kanye's visual eye in the past is any indication should be absolutely fire.

in conclusion i definitely won't be purchasing the yeezy 700 mnvn because i'm broke and sneakers are dead, and i wont see the documentary either, at least until it comes to a theater closer to me.
